Algorithmic Play Artefact

Please find my Algorithmic Play artefact HERE.

This has been a busy and very interesting week and I hope my artefact has managed to incorporate a bit of everything…analysis…humour…reflection and some conclusions. I hope you enjoy it.

My ethnography – A community with a focus

My micro-ethnography artefact is available here.

I feel that my ethnography on the MOOC ‘Launching Innovation in Schools’ is a mixture of different things, some statistical data, an evaluation of posts, use of language and some personal observations. I did feel at one point that I spent more time than necessary on the statistical data but I found that patterns in replies and activity between participants shed some light on the type of community that was (and is still) forming. I decided to choose a discussion around a video thread that seemed to have more activity than other threads.

Over the last few weeks, I did feel like I ‘ like discovering a cozy
little world that had been flourishing without me, hidden within the walls of my house’ Rheingold (2000). Accessing the MOOC every few days or receiving reminders of posts on my mobile every few days did feel like being part of something else. I felt that my MOOC was ‘a community of practice’ more than anything else but the depth of experience expressed was enlightening and comforting at the same time in my profession.

My Artefact

I started my artefact at the beginning of this week with half an idea that kept on changing and changing until it divided itself into three smaller ideas. At times, the pull towards creating something original overshadowed the drive to stay in line with the themes of these three weeks. Finally, I hope… I have created a synthesis of some of the readings, films and discussions of the past three weeks.

The Desks: the two desks are probably obvious in their representation of the changing nature of education and learning spaces. This is not just the use of technology to enhance but a change towards a new model of learning. The left (classic) desk points towards the old blackboard. Light is coming in from the side and reflecting on the source of knowledge…the board. In the second desk, the lighting is emanating from the sources of information towards the user. I find this play of light interesting. In the first, it is directing the user to the source of information, while in the second the source of information is all around. I could have probably cloned in someone at the desk but the absence of people is perhaps indicative of the fact that learning is not limited to a single space.

The Cartoon was my creative act of escapism and it is what I started first. The idea was triggered off by ‘A Space Odyssey’ and the opening monkey scene and then developed it as I went along.

The word cloud android is composed of the tags used in my blog posts, the names of some of the films from the festival and a couple more from the readings over the current block. The android was my final attempt to round up all that was covered over these past weeks.
