I recently joined ds106 as an open participant, whilst conducting a very small scale micro-ethnographic study of ds106 as part of the Education and Digital Cultures (EDC) course (#mscedc).
I’m new to all this, but trying my hand at a few of the assignments, such as Make Noise from a Normal Sample.
I recorded the original sample myself on my phone…can you guess what it might be?
It sounds like a ZX Spectrum trying to load a game from a tape.
Great guess!
This one was actually the sound of a kitchen tap running, but put through a load of different effects in an audio editor (including EQ, compressor, a “fuzz-wah”, “bitcrusher”, stereo spread and some reverb).
Amazing how different it ended up sounding!
Crazy, I was think traffic, or a car crash, it is amazing how you can denatures sounds, it makes me want to join a noise band!
Yes absolutely, I was pretty surprised how the original was obscured so much! Reminds me of something I heard about foley artists making TV/film/radio sound effects using interesting objects, such as hitting coconuts to make the sound of a horse walking, or waving aluminium sheets for thunder sounds…

Definitely up for joining a noise band too!
